Prior training in architecture or design is not required. 

Prospective students interested in pursuing licensure should apply to the M Arch I program if you have anybachelor degree other than a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch), including a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Art, Bachelor of Design, or Bachelor of Environmental Design. 

Pre reqs

The M Arch I program has two prerequisites: 

[  ]  One semester of Calculus

[  ]  One semester of Physics for Non-Technical Majors (non-calculus based) [see PHY 302K]

+ Pre-reqs are not required to apply. The pre-reqs must be fulfilled before the first class day of the first semester. Students will not be able to enroll if the pre-reqs are not fulfilled.

+ Acceptable pre-reqs cover the same content as the UT Austin equivalent courses linked above. Submit pre-req documentation to the Graduate Office at least one week before the first class day in the fall.

+ The pre-req credit must appear on a college transcript. We will accept AP credit if it appears on a college transcript. We will not accept any high school transcripts for pre-reqs.

Admissions deadline

[  ] The deadline to submit or upload all admissions documents including Graduate School and departmental requirements is 8:00 am on January 8, 2018

+ We strongly recommend submitting your ApplyTexas application a month before the deadline to allow for adequate time to submit or upload all materials.

+ It may take 24-48 hours from when you submit the ApplyTexas application before you receive the email to access your MyStatus page to upload departmental requirements.

+ You must also pay the application fee before you will be able to upload any documents to MyStatus. 

Graduate School requirements

[  ] Follow the Graduate School instructions to submit the application, application fee, transcripts and test scores. The SOA requires a GRE score.

Statement of purpose

[  ] Upload your statement through MyStatus.

+ An essay of 750 - 1,000 words that addresses your interest in the M Arch I program with respect to your academic and professional objectives, the factors that led you to apply to the UTSOA, a situation or job that helped you define your interest, your most substantial professional contribution and why you view it as such, and/or any other factors related to your academic or professional experience that you wish to convey to the admissions committee.

+ You may submit your ApplyTexas online applicationbefore finishing your statement of purpose. You can later upload your statement through MyStatus.

Three letters of recommendation

[  ] Manage and track your letters through MyStatus.

[  ] Provide recommenders' emails as part of the ApplyTexas online application.

+ Recommenders may include former instructors (preferred) and professional employers.

+ Letters should include comments on the applicant’s intellectual, communicative, and leadership abilities as well as his or her capacity for creativity and relevant personal characteristics.

+ Letters must be in English or include an English translation.

+ After you submit your application and pay your application fee, notification emails will be sent to your recommenders. Any delay in submitting your application or application fee will delay the notifications to your recommenders.

Portfolio

[  ] Upload portfolio as a single pdf through the portfolio credential on MyStatus.

The portfolio helps the reviewers determine your potential to perform successfully in a studio-based design curriculum. In order to fairly and accurately review each application, the admissions committee requires evidence in one or more categories:

  • The level of creative skill you possess in any medium.

  • The extent of your interest in the M Arch I, made evident through your abilities in composition, physical form-making, or perception of the environment.

  • Your ability to translate ideas into physical form, even if in simple terms such as drawing.

FORMAT

Portfolios should be designed and formatted for on-screen viewing (avoid a double spread layout). Maximum file size is 25 MB.

ATTRIBUTION

For each project, list the applicant’s name, the project’s date, and an indication as to whether the project was academic, office-related, or personal. In the case of collaborative or professional work, the contribution by the applicant must be precisely described.

ORGANIZATION

The organization of the portfolio is a design exercise. It should be clear, succinct, and thoughtfully composed to best reflect your interests and skills. The quality of the work is of greater importance than quantity.

applicants with little to no prior background in design

The portfolio is not expected to show architectural skills. Rather, it should contain work that demonstrates facility with a variety of media and illustrates three-dimensional understanding. You may demonstrate your creative, artistic, and perceptual skills through painting, sculpture, or other three-dimensional explorations, such as objects you have designed and constructed. Photography as an example of creative work must demonstrate intention in composition, color/light, or other critical point of view.

Applicants seeking advanced placement should submit examples of work demonstrating an ability to pursue study at an advanced level. The portfolio should be of high quality and provide evidence of well-developed graphic skills, a sense of design (including integration of building technologies), and an understanding of space, form, and volume at different scales. The committee assumes the portfolio represents the applicant’s best abilities in design.

CHECKLIST OF APPLICATION MATERIALS

All applicants for all programs must submit each item listed below unless otherwise specified for a particular program. 


1. Graduate School Application Form must be completed online.

2.Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts or academic records must be uploaded directly to the ApplyYourself online application. International students must also upload an English translation if the transcript is not in English. Please do NOT submit paper copies of this material because it will cause delays in your application processing. You will only be asked to submit official transcripts or academic records if you are admitted. The University of Minnesota reserves the right to require the submission of official transcripts or credentials any time during the admission review process.

3. Essay

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ONLY REQUIRE THE ESSAYS DESCRIBED BELOW.  THE ONLINE APPLICATION WILL PROMPT YOU FOR ADDITIONAL ESSAYS PERTAINING TO CAREER GOALS, DIVERSITY, ETC.  THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE DOES NOT NEED THESE AND YOU DO NOT NEED TO SUBMIT THEM.


a. Master of Architecture
Two brief essays, each one no more than 500 words. Select from two of the following three options. Upload the two essays at the "Graduate Program Supplementary Information" section and use the "UPLOAD #1" and "UPLOAD #2" buttons.


Option #1 - Write about a formative personal experience that helped to inspire your interest in pursuing the professional study of architecture and the built environment.
Option #2 - Describe a place that is meaningful and state why you find it meaningful.
Option #3 - Describe an object (at any scale) that you find sublime, grotesque or culturally significant and state why.


b. M.S. in Architecture - Sustainable Design Track

Essay may be up to 1,000 words, outlining Sustainable Design as an area of study. Please define possible research topics to be pursued, your experience and preparation for the field, career goals and other relevant information that supports the application. Upload this essay at the "Graduate Program Supplementary Information" section and use the "UPLOAD #1" button.


c. M.S. in Architecture – Heritage Preservation & Conservation Track

Write a brief statement up to 1000 words explaining your interests in, and commitment to, heritage conservation and preservation as an area of study. Define possible research topics to be pursued, your experience and preparation for the field, career goals, and other relevant information that supports the application. Upload this essay at the "Graduate Program Supplementary Information" section and use the "UPLOAD #1" button.


d. M.S in Architecture– Metropolitan Design Track

A statement up to 1000 words, outlining specific interests in the metropolitan design area of study. Please define possible research topics to be pursued, your experience and preparation for the field, career goals, and other relevant information that supports the application.  Upload this essay at the "Graduate Program Supplementary Information" section and use the "UPLOAD #1" button.

e. M.S. in Architecture - Research Practices Concentration

Submit a statement up to 1,000 words that includes 1) research interests including any past research pursued and methodology skills learned 2) ideal electives that would support your research interests and skill-building 3) a description of your work experience and professional progress and goals, including approximate IDP/AXP hours in each area and clarification of your intention for licensure (which state(s) and if you plan to track 5600 hours or 3740 hours or both).


4. Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

Required of all applicants for the M. Arch., MS-SD, MS-HCP and MS-MD.  The GRE is optional for the MS-RP program . Applicants should take the general test and submit scores for verbal, quantitative and analytical skills. The UMN-Twin Cities Graduate School code is 6874.

5. TOEFL (International Applicants)

Submit scores from one of the four English language tests. Applicants must have a minimum score of

600 (TOEFL paper test);

90  (internet based TOEFL test);

7.0 (IELTS Test);

80 (MELAB test).

Preference is given to applicants with an equivalent TOEFL paper test score of 600 or higher.

International students who earn their undergraduate degree in the United States are not required to submit TOEFL scores.

6. Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required and are processed through the online application. Applicants are encouraged to submit 2 of the 3 letters from faculty members who are familiar with their aptitude for academic work. If an applicant majored in architecture as an undergraduate, then faculty letters should be from design studio faculty.

7. Portfolio /  Research/Writing Sample
a. Master of Architecture

The portfolio should be uploaded as a pdf file electronically to the digital publishing platform ISSUU.COM.  You will need to create an account as a "publisher" in order to use this site.  There is no fee to do this. Please use your complete name in the registration process since this will be generating a URL weblink to your portfolio.

The online application will ask you to paste in a "Link to Portfolio."

TWO-YEAR PROGRAM.  Submit a portfolio of approximately 12-20 pages/sides that indicates an ability to produce drawings of architectural form and space, as well as a broader design sensitivity. Architectural drawings and design studio work should be included. Other work showing artistic or design ability or facility with digital technology may also be included.  Please do not send a hard copy of the portfolio.


THREE-YEAR PROGRAM   Submit a portfolio of 8-15 pages/sides. The portfolio should indicate design ability through drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic art, industrial design, or photography (2 pages of photographs maximum). The portfolio must include a hand-drawn self portrait. The drawing must not be copied from a photograph. Please do not send a hard copy of the portfolio.

 

b. MS in Architecture - Sustainable Design Track

The portfolio should be uploaded as a pdf file electronically to the digital publishing platform ISSUU.COM.  You will need to create an account as a "publisher" in order to use this site.  There is no fee to do this. Please use your complete name in the registration process since this will be generating a URL weblink to your portfolio.

The online application will ask you to paste in a "Link to Portfolio."


The portfolio should be of no more than approximately 10 pages/sides that demonstrates your design ability, sustainable practices, or professional accomplishment. Design studio projects may be included. Other work showing artistic or design ability or facility with digital technology may also be included. Please do not send a hard copy of the portfolio.

 

c. M.S. in Architecture – Heritage Preservation & Conservation Track

NO PORTFOLIO IS REQUIRED

Instead, please provide a sample of your writing, in English, from a recent architecture, landscape architecture, art history, preservation, or related course or project. Applicants may submit a professional report or published article. This requirement is intended to provide the committee with a sample of your research, communication, and analytical skills.

 

d. M.S. in Architecture – Metropolitan Design Track
