General Information for Starting the Course :

2018 AP EXAM REVIEW SCHEDULE IS POSTED BELOW (right)

AP Biology Syllabus - Fall 2017

Summer Assignment: Fall 2017 -(*Must download first or hyperlinks won't work)
*if the hyperlink to the required 'Statistics and Ch 1-4' questions still doesn't work after downloading, click here to access it. Links to the videos are below (see left column) under          "Unit Assignments"

AP Biology Book ProjectFall 2017
*INSTALLMENTS FOR THIS BOOK PROJECT MUST BE DONE IN A COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK AND WILL COUNT AS ONE TEST GRADE. This notebook must NOT be the same one that you will use for collecting lab data throughout the semester, so be sure to DO THIS ASSIGNMENT IN A SEPARATE COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK.  YOU MUST 'HAND-WRITE' EACH QUESTION, FOLLOWED BY THE ANSWER. You must follow the directions exactlyfor the opportunity to do the 'extra credit' questions toward the end of the semester and be eligible to drop your lowest test grade!

Other Important Information to Know before Starting the Course:

1) Here is a suggested link (there are certainly other reputable sites) for purchasing a used hard copy of our book. The Campbell 'Biology' book is considered the 'granddaddy' of college biology textbooks and is a great book to have on hand. However, purchasing one to keep at home is optional! The good news is that buying a used copy is pretty inexpensive and having one at home will greatly lighten the load of your backpack, since the book is really heavy. A book will be issued to you from school in the fall, but it must be returned at the end of fall semester (*remember, the AP Exam is in May). If you decide to purchase one to keep at home, the school-issued book could be kept in your locker. Regardless of what you choose to do, you must have a hard copy of the book in class EVERY DAY!

2) Be sure & sign up for a Remind account! Here's the code for 2017-18 remind_2017.docx

3) Email me BY 6/4/17 to get your online book (etext) access code! susan.phillips@cobbk12.org.
ONLY USE THE STUDENT ACCESS CODE ONCE!
For FIRST TIME on-line access:

 A) Open www.pearsonschool.com/access, as instructed on the attachment that I will send you, after you email me with the request. Enter the student code from the attachment and create your account. Once you create a user name and PW,  log out.
NEXT:
B)
Go to  http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com/northamerica/masteringbiology/ to access the etext, reading guides, etc.
Do NOT go back to the access site and enter the student code again! The Pearson site sees each log-in, where you enter the student access code, as a 'new' (different) student. Once a student access code has been used 50 times, NO ONE else can access the site. So if I get a new student, s/he cannot access the site, as they will not give me anymore codes for 2017-2018. Please BE SURE to write down your user name and PW somewhere, because I will not have access to it!

4) THERE WILL BE A QUIZ ON CHAPTERS 1-4, ALONG WITH GRAPHING AND BASIC STATISTICS, DURING THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF THE SEMESTER (likely Wednesday, 8/2). Chapter 5 ('Large Biological Molecules') will not be on the 1st quiz, but will be on the 1st test. I would recommend you read, take notes and do the Ch 5 Reading Guide (you are responsible for printing it from the Pearson website) before school starts. Projected date for 1st Major Test: Tuesday, 8/8 or Wednesday, 8/9.

5) To be successful in this course, it is required that you 'work ahead' (please read the AP Biology Syllabus at the top of this page). Each reading guide must be completed the night before we begin the topic, which means you will have homework (for an upcoming unit) on the same evening that you just completed a major test. Unlike Magnet and Honors Biology, there is very little time in class devoted to 'lecture/explaining', as AP Biology is mostly application based. There is a great deal of explorative lab work, as mandated by College Board. Students must be responsible for a great deal of their own learning. Those who get behind typically do not do very well in the course. Remember...this is a college course you are taking in high school.  Be proactive and do not procrastinate!

6) See the right hand column under "Additional Information" (below) for recommended paperback texts to purchase for this class. *I highly recommend you get the Pearson Education 'AP Test Prep' book (Author: Holtzclaw) ASAP.  I only have ONE class set, so students can't take a copy of it home. I know it's available on Amazon, as well as other sites. Make sure the edition is 2013 or newer.

7) Power Points, Videos, Formula sheets, etc. for the 'Summer Assignments' can be found below. 'PPts' are in one section (below, left) and 'Unit Work' is in another section (below, further down on the left). 'Class Announcements' and 'Resources', such as links for 'College Board' are below, right hand column. Be sure and register for a College Board account asap. Exam registration usually begins in October.

I am genuinely looking forward to having each of you in class and getting to know all of you. :)

Here's to a great school year!
Mrs. Phillips

DAILY AGENDA 10-19-2016 FOR ALL BLOCKS (classes didn't meet today due to standardized testing). Worksheets are posted above and the Bozeman video link and worksheet for 'Stickleback' is posted below (under 'Videos')

Reference Materials for this Unit:
1- "Concepts of Evolution" PPt (from Magnet Biology) is in the Power Point section of this blog (scroll up)
2- Hardy Weinberg Worked Sample Problems
3- 'Hardy Weinberg' PPt (with examples): In Power Point section of this blog (scroll up)
4- Go to youtube.com and search for 'Science with Mr.J'. He has video lectures for almost every chapter in AP Bio, using our book. Since our time is becoming very limited, my 'lectures' over the remaining chapters will also be brief. He does a very good job with covering the material. If you find another lecture series that's good, please let me know!
5- Need help with phylogenetic trees? Here are some very good youtube videos for understanding cladograms (including monophyletic, paraphyletic, polyphyletic, parsimony, etc): Here's one from Kahn Academy that shows you how to 'build a tree' and another one that gives a very clear example of parsimony.

Videos:
1- Bozeman- AP Bio 'Natural Selection'. Complete this sheet.
2- Bozeman- Comparing DNA Sequences. (How to Use BLAST data base)
3- Bozeman- Phylogenetic Trees (alternate: this one from Kahn Academy )
4- Phylogenetic Trees- watch first. Then, Phylo. Trees Practice. *The guy ('SimpleBiology') who made these made an entire series of Evolution videos recently (fall 2017) and they are REALLY GOOD.
5- Parsimony (and here's another one that gives a very clear example of parsimony).
6- Hardy Weinberg- see SimpleBiology series on youtube, above, (#4) or watch Bozeman Hardy-Weinberg on youtube.
7- BLAST tutorial: This one is the most clear cut for what we are doing, but the example shown uses a protein sequence of amino acids, instead of a nucleotide sequence. This one is good, but you may want to fast forward to around the 7:25 minute mark and start it there.
8- 'Science with Mr.J' video series for AP Bio on youtube.com. More info on this is posted under "Reference Materials", directly above.
9- Stickleback Video with Quiz (we will either do this one or the Bozeman one, below). May have to be done in next unit-2017
10- Bozeman AP Bio Stickleback video and worksheet. May have to be done with next unit in 2017.

Outlines:
All outlines that I have posted previously for other units were Pearson Instructor Guides for teachers. I am reluctant to post any of those for this unit, as we are not covering everything in every chapter (and I don't have time to revise those, as I'm in process of doing that already with the PPts). Power Points (posted above, scroll up) will be your best resource. However, here is one that's pretty good for Ch 35 and Ch 36. I will post any others I run across that I think will be beneficial.
